Superfoods: The Superheroes of Food

Superfoods are nutrient-rich foods considered to be beneficial for health and well-being. They are like our bodies superheroes and although they can be costly at times, they are good quality foods that keep the body satisfied, healthy and fuller for longer.

For Christmas, my dad bought me “The Magic of Superfoods” – a great book that shares recipes and valuable information on the different superfoods available.

There are 3 superfoods that I have been using in my smoothies and that I’m going to talk about today:

  • Hemp
  • Maca
  • Cacao

These superfoods all possess amazing qualities that do wonders for our bodies. I also include chia seeds every now and then when I know I need the smoothie to sustain me for longer and to thicken the smoothie.

Properties of my Smoothie Superheroes:

HEMP

  • Protein-rich (it is an organic muscle builder and energy booster)
  • Immune system supporter
  • Omega-3 rich
  • Hormone balancing
  • Liver supporting
  • Digestive health

MACA

Maca satisfies our appetite for longer and gives us more energy and focus

  • Immune system supporter
  • Improved brain function
  • Stress support
  • Hormonal support
  • Thyroid support
  • Nature’s aphrodisiac
  • Enhanced fertility
  • Athletic support
  • Longevity

CACAO

  • Cardiovascular health
  • Longevity antioxidants
  • Brain health
  • Energy boosting
  • Natural antidepressant – it is a source of serotonin and dopamine
  • Weight loss – cacao has a hunger satiating effect (processed chocolate makes you gain weight because of the processed sugar and dairy, not the cacao)

As you can see – these little additions to your diet can make a massive impact on your health and well-being. I combine these ingredients to make a delicious peanut butter smoothie (confession time: I have to include peanut butter where ever and when ever I can – the obsession is real!)
