Treat Time

I recently shared my favourite eat out spots in Cape Town and soon realised that I didn’t include desserts. I know, I am appalled at myself too, especially given my ridiculous sweet tooth!

So now it is Treat Time and I want to share my favourite sweet tooth moments with you. I usually opt for home baked goodies as a treat, but here are a few of my favourite go-to sweet spots in and around Cape Town:

Ice-cream, You Scream, We all Scream for Ice-Cream

The Creamery

The Creamery is now open in Newlands, Salt River and Mouille Point. This Dessert Cafe serves ice creams, waffles and hot cookies with an assortment of additional toppings and sauces. Their portion sizes are so generous and their treats are just delicious!

My favourite classic flavours are the Rosetta Coffee and Peanut Butter. These flavours are so rich and real. Another favourite of mine, which only makes a sneaky appearance every now and then, is the Carrot Cake flavour – this has real bits of cake in the ice-cream. I mean have you ever! This also happens to be July’s flavour of the month so best you get involved ASAP.

The Creamery in Mouille Point is the perfect place to satisfy the sweet tooth while strolling on the promenade watching the sea or beautiful sunset. Definitely one of my top 10 things to do in Cape Town.

Cold Gold

Cold Gold is based in Stellenbosch (but is served in numerous places all over the Western Cape) and produces ice creams, sorbets and practically any frozen fantasy. All of their products are prepared from using only fresh, organic, seasonal and local ingredients sourced from local farms and small producers in the Winelands. Cold Gold products contain no artificial flavouring & colouring, no stabilizers, no preservatives and no chemicals. The best thing about Cold Gold is that they can make ice cream to meet any dietary requirements! Amazing!

Cold Gold is continuously experimenting with their flavours but always have their staples available in gourmet, banting, vegan, paleo, low carb and diabetic flavours.

Lecca il Gelato

Lecca il Gelato in Stellenbosch is a quaint Italian Gelateria serving an assortment of ice-cream flavours, hot drinks and pancakes. One of their secret weapons has to be the Lindt Cone. Yum.

At Lecca il Gelato you can find a selection of delicious ice-cream flavours ranging from the standard chocolate to flavours such as pistachio and amarula.

Keep Calm and Froyo On

Marcels Frozen Yoghurt has always been a delicious treat, but recently I discovered one of their “newer” flavours: Lemon Poppy Seed. Oh my word. This flavour is amazing and the frozen yoghurt texture is so creamy.

If you’re looking for a delicious, fresh treat that is low-fat then Marcels has definitely got what you need!

Myog is 98% fat free and made from fresh local dairy. They offer a range of flavours that change every month. One can expect flavours such as Rooibos, Coffee, Peanut Butter and Strawberry with the option of adding toppings such as seasonal fruit or a variety of saucy or sweet toppings.

If you not up for “froyo”, Myog also serves smoothies and their signature Yoffee – a delicious alternative to a cappuccino: a shot of premium blended nespresso coffee, with a dollop of irresistible frozen yogurt.

So I am obsessed with Nu Smoothies and although they are often a healthy meal replacement, I crave these as a treat too. Be warned: they are very filling and really substantial. My 3 favourites are: The Nutter, The Secret Blu & The Strawberry-B.

Apart from their Smoothies, Nu also serves delicious Frozen Yoghurt with a selection of toppings to choose from. The combination of yogurt, honey and mint is definitely a must!

Let them Eat Cake

Velvet Cake Co

Ok, so Velvet Cake Co makes the best cakes in Cape Town- hands-down! Their carrot cake gives homemade cake a run for it’s money and they have the perfect balance between icing and cake. They serve a range of unique cakes and cupcakes and never fail to deliver only the best!

Birdcage in Stellenbosch was our go-to cupcake stop when the sugar cravings hit during University (which I must add was ALOT). Their cupcakes are moist, fresh and so delectable!

Birdcage offers the following:

  1. Chocolate Nutella cupcake
  2. Chocolate Rolo cupcake
  3. Top Deck cupcake
  4. Vanilla & Caramel cupcake
  5. Red Velvet cupcake
  6. Carrot & Pecan cupcake
  7. Lemon Meringue cupcake
  8. Chocolate Caramel Meringue cupcake

Beverage Me

Every now and then we don’t necessarily want to over-indulge, but feel that the regular cappuccino just won’t suffice. This is when you should opt for one of these decadent drinks:

The Gardener’s Cottage

The Gardener’s Cottage in Newlands serves the best Chai Chino in Cape Town (according to me). It is basically a hug in a mug.

Seattle Coffee Co

Seattle Coffee Company serves a deadly Butterscotch Latte which will leave you sipping to the last little drop and wishing for more.

Woolworths Cafe

Woolies Cafe has to serve thee best frosted latte ever. Their frosted latte is the perfect guilt-free treat as it is made from ice, milk and coffee powder. There is no ice-cream included, although it tastes like there is. They also serve a mean Vanilla and Cinnamon Cappuccino for those cold days where sweet comfort is what you looking for.

Tribakery offers a delicious Extreme Toffee Coffee which is just heavenly and ever so decadent! Treat yourself to this gourmet drink and expect your tummy to smile.

Homemade Bakes

If you are more of a baker and would prefer to make your own delicious treats, find the recipes for these homemade treats on Relish:

  1. Lemon Meringue
  2. Chocolate Cake
  3. Carrot Cake
  4. Carrot Cheesecake
  5. Beat n Babe Cupcakes
