Eat Out…But Where?

The dreaded question every boyfriend fears to ask his girlfriend is “Where or What do you want to eat?”. For some reason, this seems to be one of the hardest questions for a girl to answer!

In Cape Town, I put this down to the fact that there’s just SO much to choose from!

I often get asked for suggestions of “Where to Eat” in Cape Town and when put on the spot, one’s mind loves to hit a blank. So, I thought I would compile a list of my favourite “g0-to” places and share it with all of you

Feel like Pizza: 

Da Vinci’ s on Kloof 

I recommend Da Vinci’s Pizza’s and Chilli Poppers. My favourite Pizza is the “Verdi” – a pesto based pizza topped with tomatoes, feta, walnuts and greens.

Thirsty Scarecrow

Beer Pizza! It is so yum and so crunchy! The hit of the day from Thirsty Scarecrow was definitely the “Fat Tony” when we celebrated my cousin’s birthday. It really is a great venue to host birthdays and eat delicious pizza.

Bramptons

My ultimate “Wine Time” venue! This wine bar has to be one of my all time favourite places. Not only is the wine delicious, but the pizzas sure do give every Italian pizzeria a run for their money. With generous portion sizes, Brampton’s pizzas are perfect to share over a bottle of wine (or two, or three…). My favourite menu item is the Chicken Pizza – a crunchy pizza base topped with Malay Style Chicken, Roasted Cherry Tomatoes, Danish Feta, Sunflower Seeds, Rocket & Malay Yoghurt Dressing.

Sgt Pepper

Sgt Pepper can be found on Long Street in Cape Town or Ryneveld Street in Stellenbosch. Their pizzas are thin and they offer an assortment of unique and tasty pizza toppings. Throughout University, the all-time student favourite was definitely the “Tannie Tandoori” – a tandoori chicken pizza with sweet chilli, cream cheese and rocket.

Thai & Sushi: 

Yindees

If you looking for good Thai food then Yindees is the place to go! You can opt to sit on the floor too to create the ultimate Thai dining experience. This restaurant has great food and an awesome atmosphere. I love their Phad Prik Gaproa (Chilli & Basil Stir fry).

Sushi Box

This is just a gem for all sushi-lovers. They are situated in Kloof Street and in Newlands. The sushi is awesome and this is a great lunchtime spot and take away restaurant. They do not have a liquor licence, but allow you to bring your own drinks with no corkage charged. Sushi Box makes a mean crispy prawn roll.

Beluga

The thing I love most about Beluga  is their awesome specials. They run a daily half-price cocktail and sushi special as well as fine dining specials. The restaurant has a great atmosphere, awesome staff and delicious food. Their Kingklip meal and their Sushi is a must try.

Mexican: 

Fat Cactus

What’s better than a Mexican Fiesta? This restaurant offers an awesome vibe, delicious chilli poppers and nacho’s and unbelievably frozen jugs. YUM!! You can find Fat Cactus in Mowbray, Gardens and Woodstock in Cape Town.

Finer Dining:

Cattle Baron

The Cattle Baron can be found all over the country. I have been to the one in Constantia on numerous occasions and have never been disappointed. My brother loves going here when the parents come to town. It is a Steak Ranch & Grill House and red meat seems the obvious choice, but I have to vouch for their fish. My Kingklip was phenomenal. As for the steak, the rest of the family were highly impressed.

Asoka

I recently visited this restaurant for a bachelorette and the decor of this quaint gem was the first thing to convince me that our night at Asoka was bound to be a success. Apart from the decor, our waitress was awesome and the assortment of tapas was flavourful. My favourite was the vegetarian taco dish. The other girls raved about the baby potatoes and Ceviche. Asoka managed to make something as simple as potatoes one of the most highly praised food items.

Everyday Spots:

Sotano

Sotano is a great spot for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Situated in Mouille Point, with a view of the sea, this spot serves incredible Mediterranean inspired cuisine. The must-have breakfast has to be the Mediterranean Breakfast. Poached egg served with halloumi, bacon, avocado, rocket and sundried tomato pesto. I mean YUM! My mom still raves about this breakfast months later. This is also a great spot to enjoy delicious sushi and an awesome tapas menu.

Hudsons

Because who doesn’t love a meal at Hudson’s? I mean their sweet potato wedges. Come on! And what’s not to love about their huge cocktails and massive gourmet milkshakes?

The Hudson’s Mint Mojito is my favourite cocktail and with their happy hour everyday, one can enjoy half price cocktails regularly. This Burger Joint just happens to get everything right. Their salads, burgers and pizzas are all delicious and to top it all off, you’re always guaranteed a good vibe!

Nu

Nothing beats a Nu Smoothie. I absolutely love their Nutter Smoothie and my new-found favourite is the Secret Blu Smoothie. A combination of nut butter, banana, dates, coconut and more. It honestly tastes like a Hummingbird Cake in a drink. And it’s healthy. BONUS.

Nu’s smoothies are ridiculously tasty and filling. For those not so mad about nuts in smoothies, the Strawberry-B is a delicious smoothie with the perfect touch of mint.

Bootlegger Coffee Company

I just love the Bootlegger Coffee Company’s coffee. I recently blogged about their new cafe in Kalk Bay where we had delicious pizzas surrounded by surreal scenery. I cannot fault this place. Read about it here.

Tasha’s

Last, but not least, Tasha’s definitely deserves a mention. Their Butternut Salad is definitely something to write home about. I dream about this gourmet salad with roast butternut, goats cheese and pine nuts. The portion sizes are ever so generous and a half-portion salad definitely suffices.

Tasha’s is also known for serving their wine in thee best wine glasses ever. Huge and thin rimmed. Perfect accompaniment to any meal.
